Four weeks to a calmer moving day.

A good move is less about doing everything early and more about doing the right things in the right order. Use this timeline for a local move, then adjust it around your lease, closing date and utility providers.

Four weeks before

  • Confirm the date you receive keys and the date you must leave your current home.
  • Choose a moving company, rental truck or helper plan.
  • Measure large furniture and the narrowest doors, stairs and elevators.
  • Begin donating, selling or discarding items you do not want to move.
  • Reserve reusable moving crates or estimate the cardboard boxes you need.
  • Create one folder for contracts, receipts, inventory notes and confirmation numbers.

Two weeks before

  • Schedule utility transfers and internet installation.
  • Submit your USPS change of address and update important financial, insurance and medical accounts directly.
  • Confirm loading access, parking restrictions, elevator reservations and gate codes at both addresses.
  • Pack décor, books, seasonal belongings and other nonessential items.
  • Plan for specialty items such as televisions, artwork, wardrobes and irreplaceable documents.

The final week

  • Pack one clearly marked first-night crate with medications, chargers, toiletries, bedding, towels and basic tools.
  • Photograph valuable items and electronics before transport.
  • Use smaller containers for dense items and do not overload any crate.
  • Keep important documents, jewelry, keys and medication with you.
  • Check the forecast and prepare floor protection for rain, snow or muddy conditions.
  • Confirm delivery, truck and helper arrival windows.

Moving day

  • Walk both properties before loading or unloading and photograph existing damage.
  • Keep children and pets away from loading paths.
  • Load heavier, sturdy containers low and secure stacks before driving.
  • Check closets, cabinets, garages, storage rooms and outdoor areas before leaving.
  • Confirm where empty rental crates should be stacked for pickup.
