Strong crates still need smart packing.
A durable container protects against crushing, but it cannot prevent movement inside. Fragile items need cushioning, sensible weight and empty space filled correctly.
Start with a cushioned base
Place several inches of packing paper, bubble cushioning or clean soft material across the bottom. Avoid using loose clothing for items that could stain or cut fabric. The goal is to create an even layer that absorbs movement.
Wrap pieces individually
- Wrap dishes and plates separately and place them vertically when practical.
- Fill hollow glassware with paper before wrapping the outside.
- Protect handles, stems and corners with additional cushioning.
- Keep heavy items low and lighter items above them.
- Do not combine fragile objects with tools, books or other dense items.
Remove empty movement
After packing, fill gaps along the sides and top so items cannot shift when the crate is moved. Do not force the lid closed or pack above the rim. Both halves of the attached lid should close naturally and completely.
Treat electronics and irreplaceable items differently
Original manufacturer packaging is usually the best option for televisions, computers and specialty electronics. Keep medication, jewelry, legal documents, family keepsakes and uniquely valuable items with you rather than in a general moving load.
Label for the people doing the lifting
Mark the crate as fragile on more than one side and note the destination room. Labels do not replace careful packing, but they help everyone handle the load appropriately. Remove temporary labels before returning rental crates.
Pack the contents. Skip building the box.
EZCrates arrive with attached lids and a consistent shape, ready for your protective packing materials and labels.
